Elements of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics

Written with context to the National Building Code of Canada, “Elements of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics” efficiently presents the concepts of earthquake dynamics and ductility design. From my limited research, this textbook is the reference book used for the SEABC C4-1 and C4-2 courses, adding to its applicability for practicing structural engineers.

I appreciated the fast pace and breadth of the structural dynamics chapter. When compared to Anil Chopra’s guidebook, the information is appropriately scaled down for better transition to the more practical aspects of structural design. The limited scale does leave a lot of the differential equations and linear algebra open ended. The presentation choice is appropriate given that most modern structural dynamic design is carried out with complete software programs.

André Filiatrault does a fine job presenting hazard analysis, modal analysis, and response spectra analysis before exploring specific applications to concrete and steel design. The Vancouver Public Library offers the 1998 first edition. This means that the code references use NBCC 1995 and A23.3-94 and S16-94. While seemingly out-of-date, the concept of ductility design has not changed nor has general seismological theory and structural dynamic methods. In effect, the information is beneficial as an introduction to a topic that requires in-practice experience. Currently there is a third edition published in 2013. It is not clear whether this encompasses NBCC 2010. But it is expected that the essential seismic updates to A23.3-14 and S16-14 are not present. With that in consideration, I recommend waiting for the fourth edition to be published before purchasing another bookshelf reference.
